Zatch Bell Vol 1 New May 2026
Time is cruel to manga. Used copies from 2005 often exhibit yellowing (oxidation) along the page edges. A new copy, likely from a fresh 2022 or 2023 print run, features white, bleed-resistant pages. The lightning effects on Zatch’s spells pop off the page.
This section details the technical restoration for the reader.

Zatch Bell Vol. 1: New
The wind smelled of rain and burnt circuitry. Kiyomaro Takamine, a fourteen-year-old genius who had never studied a day in his life, slumped against the gated entrance of his own home. His sharp eyes, usually glinting with bored contempt, were now wide with something unfamiliar: confusion.
His father, the eccentric archaeologist Hideo Takamine, had sent another "gift." No, this was worse than a cursed amulet or a fossilized frog. This was a child. A small, red-haired boy with pointed ears and enormous brown eyes, buck-naked and shivering, tied to a tree in the forest behind Kiyomaro’s house.
“Who the hell are you?” Kiyomaro demanded, untying the rough ropes with reluctant, slender fingers.
The boy looked up, sniffled, and then a brilliant, innocent smile cracked his face. “I’m Zatch!” he declared, his voice a tiny thunderclap. “And you’re my friend!”
Kiyomaro groaned. Great. A lunatic.
He tried to leave the boy at a police station, but Zatch just followed him home, clinging to his leg like a koala. He tried to ignore him, but Zatch set the kitchen on fire trying to make toast. And then, the real trouble began.
A man in a black leather coat appeared at Kiyomaro’s school. He wasn’t a teacher. He had dead eyes and a silver book chained to his wrist. With him was a hulking, lizard-like creature with drills for arms—a demon child, just like Zatch.
“Gofure,” the man hissed. “Erase the boy with the red book.”
The creature lunged. Desks shattered. Students screamed. Kiyomaro, ever the logical genius, tried to calculate an escape route, but his legs were frozen. Zatch jumped in front of him, arms spread wide.
“Kiyomaro, don’t move!” Zatch yelled. Then he turned to his own kind. “Please stop this! I don’t want to fight!”
The lizard-demon laughed and swung a drill-arm right at Zatch’s chest. zatch bell vol 1 new
That’s when the red book on Kiyomaro’s shelf—the one that came with Zatch—began to glow. Without thinking, Kiyomaro ripped it open. Strange, golden letters swirled in his mind. He didn’t read them; he felt them.
“Zatch,” he whispered, then shouted, “Zakeru!”
A bolt of lightning, yellow and wild, erupted from Zatch’s mouth. It wasn’t controlled. It blasted a hole through the ceiling, singed the lizard-demon’s arm, and sent the man in black fleeing.
Silence. Then, the smell of ozone and plaster dust.
Kiyomaro stared at his trembling hands, then at the panting, exhausted boy who had just saved his life. The boy who couldn’t make toast but would stand against a monster for a stranger.
“Okay,” Kiyomaro said, his usual smirk gone, replaced by something fragile and real. “Tell me everything.”
Zatch explained the battle for the demon world—one hundred demon children sent to Earth, each with a spell book. The last one standing becomes king. The human who helps them is their partner.
“So you’re a prince?” Kiyomaro asked flatly.
Zatch nodded, then promptly tripped over the rug and broke a vase.
That night, Kiyomaro didn’t sleep. He read the red book until dawn. Not because he wanted to win a war. But because for the first time in his life, someone needed him for who he was—not for his grades, not for his genius, but just for being there.
And as the sun rose over a quiet town about to be torn apart by a hundred magical battles, Kiyomaro looked at the sleeping demon child on his couch and whispered, “Alright, partner. Let’s show them what ‘new’ really means.”

The first volume of Zatch Bell! (known in Japan as Konjiki no Gash!!) marks the beginning of Makoto Raiku’s hit shonen series, establishing its unique blend of supernatural battle royale and deep emotional character growth. Plot Summary: A Battle for the Crown Time is cruel to manga
The story introduces Kiyo Takamine, a brilliant but cynical middle school student who has isolated himself from his peers because of his high intelligence. His life is upended when a mysterious boy named Zatch Bell appears at his window—sent by Kiyo's father from England—clutching a strange red book.
Kiyo soon discovers that Zatch is a Mamodo (demon), one of 100 children sent to Earth to compete in a once-every-thousand-years tournament to become the Mamodo King. Each Mamodo is paired with a human who can read spells from their book, fueled by the human's "Heart Energy". If a Mamodo's book is burned, they are sent back to their home world and disqualified from the race for the crown. Character Dynamics & Themes
Unlike many battle-centric series, Zatch Bell! Volume 1 focuses heavily on personal growth.
Kiyo’s Redemption: Initially hostile, Kiyo learns to open up through Zatch’s pure-hearted (if naive) nature. The first chapter emphasizes Zatch helping Kiyo make friends rather than just fighting.
The "Kind King" Ideal: Zatch, who has lost his memories, eventually decides he wants to become a "kind king" to stop the cruel, forced fighting among Mamodo—a goal sparked by their encounter with Kolulu. Notable Versions & Re-Releases
