The vault was a nightmare of laser grids and organic guards (the Quintessons used biological proxies, lizard-like things with too many teeth). But they got in. They found not five cogs, but a hundred. Rows upon rows, each one torn from a dead Cybertronian.
Orion reached for the largest cog—golden, humming with power. Megatronus’s cog.
“Don’t,” D-16 said. “That one is cursed.”
“It’s the only one that can fight a Prime,” Orion replied.
He took it.
The moment his fingers touched the golden gear, the vault screamed. Alarms. Laser fire. Jazz took a bolt to the shoulder. B-127 dragged him out. Orion and D-16 ran through maintenance shafts, through acid rain, through a collapsing bridge that D-16 held up with his bare hands while Orion scrambled across.
When they finally emerged, deep in the abandoned sector of Kaon, Orion clicked the golden cog into his chest.
He transformed for the first time. Not into a ground vehicle. Not into a flyer. Into something new—a crimson and blue war machine, half-truck, half-jet, all fury.
D-16 watched. And for the first time in his life, he felt something colder than hunger.
