The story begins in medieval times. The powerful sorcerer Merlin had three apprentices: Balthazar Blake, Veronica Gorloisen, and Maxim Horvath. Horvath betrayed Merlin and joined forces with the evil sorceress Morgana le Fay. They killed Merlin and attempted to raise an army of the dead to enslave humanity.

Ten years later, Dave is a physics student at NYU. Balthazar finds him and explains that he must become a sorcerer to stop Horvath. Dave is reluctant but agrees when he realizes the fate of the world is at stake. Balthazar becomes his mentor, teaching him the laws of magic and science.
