Summer 2018 came and went. No patch.

Whispers began circulating on 4chan’s /vp/ (yes, Pokémon fans were also watching) and /a/ (anime board). The truth, revealed through anonymous logs, was a classic fan-translation tragedy: internal drama.

A beta patch (v0.85) was leaked by a disgruntled QA tester. The patch was functional but buggy:

The lead translator, feeling the work was unfinished and unpolished, asked the leaker to remove the file. They refused. The translator then pulled the project entirely, deleting the Discord server and the WordPress site. The "Kyoya" hacker later posted on GitHub: "I’m done. Don’t ask for the source. As of 2019, the Ouran DS English patch was vaporware. A ghost.

Over the years, several groups have attempted to tackle the project. These efforts are almost always labors of love, undertaken by fans in their spare time without financial compensation.

Guides existed to help players brute-force their way through the routes, but the nuances of the story—Haruhi’s internal monologues and the specific flavor text of each host—were lost without knowledge of Japanese.
