NEMA is simpler and more practical for North American industrial motors (230/460V, 60 Hz). IEC is more rigorous but requires more instrumentation.

MG1-33 defines specific time intervals for which a motor can operate at a given load without exceeding temperature rise:

Additionally, "AMP-33" is increasingly replaced by IEC 60034-1 thermal classes, but NEMA MG1-33 remains dominant in North America for motors above 250 HP.

  • Altitude – Above 3300 ft (1000 m), temperature rise limits must be reduced (derate).
  • Enclosure effect – Totally enclosed motors may have slightly different measurement corrections, but rise limits remain per class.
  • Overservice – If motor runs above nameplate amps at rated voltage/frequency, temperature rise increases per MG1-33 rules.
