Ibm Imm Remote Control Activation Key Access
For servers originally manufactured by IBM but now supported by Lenovo, you can purchase an activation key via Lenovo's licensing portal.
Before spending money, verify your current license status. The method varies slightly by IMM generation (IMM, IMM2, IMM2.1).
Via Web Interface (Most common):
Using IPMI command line (Linux/Windows): ibm imm remote control activation key
ipmitool lan print 1
Or, to check features:
ipmitool mc getsysinfo
Look for strings indicating "Advanced" or "Upgrade."
Trial Period: Some IBM servers come with a 90-day trial of IMM Advanced features. If you are within that window, you can use remote control for free temporarily. The explanation lies in enterprise licensing models. IBM did not sell servers to make money on the hardware; they sold them to make money on support, software, and upgrades. The activation key is a software entitlement.

As of 2025, IBM System x servers are considered "end of life" by Lenovo. This creates a unique problem: The activation keys are now harder to get than the servers themselves.
If you bought a used server from a liquidator, it almost certainly does not have an IMM Advanced key. The original owner kept the key (as an asset) or wiped the server without backing up the license.
