Perhaps the most controversial—and brilliant—aspect of the film is its score by Academy Award-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Shape of Water). Rather than composing a traditional baroque or classical score, Desplat introduces an anachronistic instrument: the Wurlitzer.
The main theme is a bouncing, cheeky waltz played on a slightly out-of-tune electronic organ. It sounds like carnival music filtered through a 1960s sci-fi show. This choice was met with confusion in 2005, but in retrospect, it was genius. The Wurlitzer signals to the audience that we are not in a history lesson; we are in a heightened, playful fantasy. It gives the film a unique sonic identity that separates it from the stuffy period dramas of its era.
In 1753 Venice, Giacomo Casanova (Heath Ledger) is a notorious playboy whose exploits are the talk of the city. While he is celebrated by many, the Catholic Church is outraged by his behavior. The Inquisitor Pucci (Jeremy Irons) is determined to capture Casanova and execute him for heresy and debauchery.
The Doge of Venice offers Casanova a way out: he must marry a woman of noble standing and settle down, or be exiled. Casanova becomes engaged to Victoria (Natalie Dormer), a young noblewoman who is very much in love with him. However, Casanova soon meets Francesca Bruni (Sienna Miller), a feminist writer who argues for the rights of women and holds a deep disdain for men like Casanova—though she does not initially know his true identity. casanova -2005 film-
Complications arise when Francesca is promised in marriage to Paprizzio (Oliver Platt), a lard merchant from Genoa. Meanwhile, Casanova’s former lover, Bernardo (Charlie Cox), arrives in Venice, followed by Giovanni Bruni (Francesca’s brother), who poses as Casanova to impress a girl. Casanova, posing as Paprizzio to get close to Francesca, finds himself in a tangled web of mistaken identities. Eventually, he falls genuinely in love with Francesca, forcing him to confront the emptiness of his philandering lifestyle.
The film culminates in a chase sequence during the Venetian Carnival. Pucci attempts to arrest Casanova, but with the help of the various suitors and Francesca, Casanova escapes. He realizes that love is more fulfilling than lust, and he and Francesca leave Venice to travel the world together.

Focusing on the Casanova -2005 film- allows us to appreciate Heath Ledger’s versatility. Just one year later, he would deliver his Oscar-nominated dramatic turn in Brokeback Mountain (2005) and, three years later, his iconic Joker in The Dark Knight. Here, Ledger displays a rare, joyful comedic timing. He winks at the audience, breaks the fourth wall slightly, and exudes a physical athleticism (he reportedly learned to fence and swim in canals for the role).

Upon release, Casanova received mixed reviews. It currently holds a 54% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised Ledger’s charm and the production design but criticized the script for being predictable and the treatment of women as props (ironically, given the film’s themes). The flaws are real. The third act relies on a trial sequence that feels lifted from a high school play. The resolution—in which Casanova and Francesca fly away in a hot air balloon—is absurdly anachronistic (balloons weren’t invented until 1783). Furthermore, the film glosses over the darker aspects of Casanova’s biography: his arrests, his poverty, his eventual slide into obscurity as a librarian in Bohemia.
However, to criticize Casanova for lacking darkness is to critique a kitten for lacking fangs. The film is a confection. It is a valentine. It is a movie that explicitly says, "This is a lie, but it is a beautiful lie."
While the film features real historical figures, it takes extensive liberties with their lives.
