Asme Pipeline Standards Compendium

  • CSA Z662 – Canadian pipeline standard (similar but not identical to ASME B31.4/B31.8)
  • PHA (PHMSA – US regulation) – ASME B31.4/B31.8 are incorporated by reference into US federal pipeline safety regulations (49 CFR Parts 192 & 195).

  • While ASME B31.4 covers dense-phase CO2, the industry is pushing for a standalone B31.4X or an appendix in B31.12 for CO2 purity requirements (e.g., water content limits to avoid carbonic acid corrosion).

    | Standard | Title | Application | |----------|-------|-------------| | ASME B31.4 | Pipeline Transportation Systems for Liquids and Slurries | Onshore & offshore liquid pipelines (crude, refined products, CO₂, slurries) | | ASME B31.8 | Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems | Onshore gas transmission, distribution, and gathering lines | | ASME B31.11 | Slurry Transportation Piping Systems | Cross-country slurry pipelines (coal, mineral concentrates) | | ASME B31.12 | Hydrogen Piping and Pipelines | Hydrogen service (gaseous & liquid), including blending with natural gas |

Note: B31.12 is increasingly important for hydrogen infrastructure. asme pipeline standards compendium

The compendium is built around three primary ASME codes, each covering a distinct phase of a pipeline's lifecycle:

The ASME Pipeline Standards Compendium is not a single document, but rather a curated collection or a referenced grouping of the key American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) codes and standards that govern the design, construction, operation, and integrity management of pipeline systems. It serves as an essential toolkit for engineers, operators, regulators, and inspectors in the oil, gas, and chemical process industries. CSA Z662 – Canadian pipeline standard (similar but

Unlike the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), which focuses on stationary pressure equipment, the Pipeline Compendium addresses the unique challenges of transporting fluids across long distances—often through challenging terrain, populated areas, and environmentally sensitive zones.

B31.8S (below) is the integrity management supplement to B31.8.

As plastic and composite pipes become common for hydrogen and water, ASME is drafting non-metallic code sections. Expect a new B31.NM (Non-Metallic Piping Systems) to join the compendium by 2027.
