The most interesting development is WASI (WebAssembly System Interface) . WASM runtimes (Wasmer, Wasmtime) are the new AIO runtimes. They promise a single binary that runs on x86, ARM, and RISC-V without modification.
Unlike Java (which requires a 200 MB JVM), a WASM runtime is tiny (5 MB). We tested a WebAssembly build of SQLite versus a native build. The WASM version was 80% the speed of native but had zero platform-specific tuning.
For cloud edge computing, this is revolutionary. For desktop users, it currently solves a problem nobody asked for.

The shared library model remains superior for multi-application workflows. We recommend developers stick to the classic AIO model for desktop software unless you are writing a system utility that must launch in <5ms.
For users: Do not manually delete those "redundant" VC++ folders. They are not bloat; they are a high-efficiency caching mechanism.
The future is hybrid: A small AIO runtime that pre-compiles hot paths to native code on idle cores (similar to what Windows 12 is testing with "Dynamic Code Optimization"). Note : Computerbase is not a software product
